CPI(M) Files Defamation Case Against Biplab Deb; Jitendra Chaudhury Appears in Court for Testimony
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has filed a defamation case against former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb.
On Thursday, CPI(M) state secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury appeared before the First Class Judicial Magistrate, Court No. 1, to testify in the case. The hearing was held at the bench of Judicial Magistrate Abhijit Adhikari, with advocate Haribol Debnath representing the CPI(M).During the proceedings, Jitendra Chaudhury’s statement was formally recorded before the Hon’ble Judge. Based on his deposition, legal notice will now be issued to Biplab Deb.
The defamation case originates from Biplab Deb’s remarks made on April 10, 2025, at a religious event in Gandhigram, where he alleged that during the Left regime — prior to 2018 — donations and ornaments had been misappropriated from the donation boxes of the Tripura Sundari Temple. Deb had claimed that such irregularities came to his attention only after he became Chief Minister.
Though no official legal or administrative action had been taken by the then government, the CPI(M) issued a strong objection and later pursued a defamation suit against Deb.
After Thursday’s court appearance, Jitendra Chaudhury told reporters that the CPI(M) had earlier demanded proof or a public apology from Deb regarding his allegations. However, Deb neither provided evidence nor apologized for his comments. Chaudhury added that the remarks were a deliberate attempt to malign the integrity of the Left Front government and damage the CPI(M)’s public image.
According to him, the accusation not only insulted the CPI(M) as a party but also hurt lakhs of its loyal supporters across Tripura. The statement, he said, was part of a calculated effort to erode public trust in the previous Left administration.
Now, all eyes are on Biplab Deb — whether he responds to the court’s notice, and if so, what his defense might be in the days to come.
