Supreme Court Slams Centre Over MGNREGA Funds: 100 Days Work to Resume in Bengal

The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to release MGNREGA funds and restart the 100 Days Work scheme in West Bengal after four years.

Supreme Court Orders 100 Days Work Scheme to Restart in Bengal

The Supreme Court of India has rejected the Centre’s plea against the Calcutta High Court’s order to resume the 100 Days Work Scheme (MGNREGA) in West Bengal. With this landmark decision, the funds must be released and the scheme will restart in the state after being stopped for four years due to corruption charges.

The Centre had suspended funding, accusing the state of widespread misuse of money meant for rural workers. The Bengal government argued that the halt was politically motivated and left lakhs of workers without jobs. The High Court earlier clarified that old corruption cases can be investigated, but the employment scheme must continue.

On October 27, 2025, Supreme Court judges dismissed the Centre’s appeal and ordered the funds to be released so the 100 Days Work project can begin again from August 1, 2025. This decision is expected to benefit thousands of rural families and is seen as a major win for workers in West Bengal.
